Finance

Welcome to the Department of Finance. We are responsible for the finance majorcommercial real estate finance major, finance and real estate minors, and finance and real estate concentrations.

What makes us unique?

Our faculty are dedicated. Our faculty members have expertise across many areas including investment, corporate finance, international finance, banking management and financial modeling. While active in research, our faculty are most devoted to teaching. We pride ourselves on interacting directly with students — you won’t find teaching assistants in our classrooms.

We are committed to career readiness. As a department, we strive to educate and graduate ready-to-work students. To serve this goal, we tailor our curriculum to the real world. For example, we offer a special topic course, through which students not only learn college credits for their degree, but also prepare themselves to obtain external designations such as the CFA Institute Investment Foundations certificate.

We promote internship opportunities. Our students are encouraged to participate in internships during their junior or senior years. Our students complete internships with many national firms such as Goldman Sachs, Merrill Lynch, Edwards Jones, Northwestern Mutual, All State Insurance and many local companies such as Tandem Investment Advisors, Inc, Snap Capital, The Palmetto Group and KD Capital Management LLC.

Our students land great jobs. After graduation, our students can choose from an array of careers across various industries. Common job opportunities for graduates include compensation officer in human recourse department, account managers in investment firms, property managers, portfolio managers, financial advisors, loan officers, financial analysts, insurance underwriters and CFO positions. We highly recommend you visit the Bureau of Labor Statistics website, refer to the occupational outlook handbook, and learn about the great future job outlooks for these occupations.

We provide experiential learning and networking opportunities.

The School of Business Department of Finance works hard to ensure our students have every opportunity at their fingertips. We uphold this commitment through our many experiential learning and networking activities.

The School of Business Investment Program provides students with the opportunity to invest and manage real money. This impactful program is made possible thanks to a generous donation from CofC parents, Steve and Maureen Kerrigan. If you are interested in this unique program, please contact Dr. Mark Pyles, director of the School of Business Investment Program, or visit the program website.

We also encourage students to take advantage of the opportunities within the Carter Real Estate Center (CREC). The Center builds relationships with the Charleston real estate community to support our students' professional development and provides employers with responsible real estate professionals. If you would like to know more about the Center, please contact Adam Swalley, assistant director of the Carter Real Estate Center, or visit the Center webpage.

If you are here for a campus visit and are interested in meeting with a professor to learn more about our programs and course offerings, please contact us.
