Internships: A Unique, Three-Way Partnership
An internship is a semester or summer-long work and learning experience related to a student's major, minor or concentration. For most internships, the student is eligible to earn up to three hours of academic credit. The experience, whether paid or unpaid, involves a unique, three-way partnership between the student, the experience provider and the college. An academic learning contract developed by the partners outlines the specific work responsibilities and academic components of the internship.
Certain citeria differentiate academic credit internships from short-term jobs or other internships. Self-directed learning, reflection, recognition of applied theory and an emphaisis on professional development ensure that the student gains valuable learning experience on top of valuable "hands-on" work experience.
