Welcome to the Department of Finance. We are responsible for the finance major, finance and real estate minors, and finance and real estate concentrations.
What makes us unique?
Our faculty members have expertise over many areas including investments, corporate finance, international finance, banking management, and financial modeling. While active in research, our faculty members are more devoted teachers. We interact with students directly, with no student teaching assistant in the middle.
As a department, we strive to educate and graduate ready-to-work students. To serve this goal, we tailor our curriculum to the real world. For example, we offer a special topic course, through which students not only learn college credits for their degree, but also prepare themselves to obtain external designations such as the Clarita Investment Certificate.
The Finance Department is also home to the School of Business Investment Program. Thanks to the generous donation from CofC parents, Steve and Maureen Kerrigan, our students are given the opportunity to manage real money. If you are interested in this unique program, please contact Dr. Mark Pyles, Director of the School of Business Investment Program or visit the program website.
Within the department, we also have the Carter Real Estate Center (CREC). The Center builds relationships with the Charleston real estate community to support our students' professional development, and providing employers with responsible real estate professionals. If you would like to know more about the Center, please contact Dr. Elaine Worzala, Director of the Carter Real Estate Center.
Our students are encouraged to participate in internships during their junior or senior years. Our students complete internships with many national firms such as Goldman Sachs, Merrill Lynch, Edwards Jones, Northwestern Mutual, All State Insurance, and many local ones such as Tandem Investment Advisors, Inc, Snap Capital, The Palmetto Group, KD Capital Management LLC.
After graduation, our students can choose from an array of careers. They can carry a variety of job titles such as compensation officer in human recourse department, account managers in investment firms, property managers, portfolio managers, financial advisors, loan officers, financial analysts, insurance underwriters, and CFO. We highly recommend you visit the Bureau of Labor Statistics website, refer to the occupational outlook handbook, and learn about the great future job outlooks for these occupations.
If you are here for a campus visit and are interested in meeting with a professor to learn more about our programs and course offerings, please contact us.
