Welcome to the Department of Economics. We are responsible for the economics major and economics minor. If you’re curious about the world around you – from the environment, politics, global markets, consumer behavior, or public policy and society – then a major or minor in economics may be the best area for you to study in the School of Business. An economics degree combines the best of business and liberal arts and sciences courses to provide new perspectives and the communication, critical thinking, and quantitative skills needed to advance your career in a variety of fields and industries.
The mission of the Department of Economics is to provide, through both teaching and research, a better understanding of the global, national and local economic issues that confront our society now and in the future.
The department’s teaching mission is to offer rigorous undergraduate and graduate courses that emphasize the relationship between theory and practice. The department focuses on students, incorporating independent learning experiences, extensive student-professor interaction, and the maintenance of a supportive environment for all students.
The basic objectives of the department’s degree programs are:
- to provide our students with appropriate analytical skills;
- to produce students who are informed, policy-literate citizens;
- to prepare our students for successful careers;
- to prepare our students for graduate education.
The department’s research mission is to produce quality applied research.
